President outlines major development plans for Berbice region at sod turning for multi-billion dollar stadium
Declaring that the government’s development plans for the Berbice region are not part of a movie or a “tik tok” video, President Irfaan Ali on Friday revealed that in addition to a new multi-billion dollar stadium, the ancient county of Berbice will also see a new 4-lane highway, a new hospital, and other facilities.
On Friday, the government turned the sod for a multi-purpose stadium at Palmyra in Berbice. More than $3 billion will come from Exxon Mobil and its co-venturers to help pay for the building.
When it’s done, the building will be able to hold up to 10,000 people and will be able to host a variety of sports, such as international cricket, football, and track and field events.
“This journey is to rebuild, to rebuild stronger. We have made it our mission to work in every single community to ensure that every single Guyanese is part of the prosperity of our country. And what is the grand mission and grand plan that we’ve announced for this region? Development has no face, my friends, in the journey of modernization in this region” said President Ali.
With a number of local cricketers as his backdrop, the president said he wants to bring more international cricket to Guyana and the Berbice region, pointing to the financial benefits that would come along with the move.
“We are already working to bring to Guyana a world class cricket format that will see the best players in the world playing here in Guyana, and this stadium is an important part of that plan”, he noted.
The president said his government will continue to roll out major development projects all across the country.
For the Berbice region, he talked about the people who lost their jobs when the sugar estates were shut down by the previous government. He said that unemployment will be taken care of by the plans for the region’s development.
He noted that the government is also exploring the possibility of constructing a new bridge across the Berbice River while setting up agricultural processing and manufacturing facilities.
Training centers may also be established in the region in the near future. The sod-turning event was also attended by the Vice President and several cabinet ministers and other officials.
